For an aperitif, of course, but anand to take a photo of Naviglio a Colori, the light installation that will color the waters of the canals in the stretch between the Pont de ferr and the Via Valenza bridge. Next month the design community heads to Italy for Milan design week, the largest event in the industry calendar. With hundreds of events spread across the city, we have created a digital guide to the week on Dezeen Events Guide with all the key details. As the craft of crystal and glassmaking was inscribed in UNESCO’s ‘Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ in December 2023, Saint-Louis, Europe’s first glassmaker, immerses visitors at Milan Design Week with two new crystal collections.

The seventh edition of Alcova, an international platform for contemporary design, takes place in the iconic villas of Villa Borsani and Villa Bagatti Valsecchi in the Milan metropolitan area. The interplay between the two locations, a Modernist architectural work by Osvaldo Borsani, and an example of the Lombard Baroque style, create a unique experience for visitors, who will explore themes of technological innovation, sustainability, contemporary craft, and sociopolitical issues. As part of the program, Maniera will present new furniture by architect Junya Ishigami, while the Alcova Design Shop features an installation designed by Space Caviar with materials from Spazio Meta. Titled Ground Break, the exhibition showcases Ward’s exploration of performativity and collaborative projects, featuring over thirty years of practice, including early seminal works and new productions.

This Milan Design Week, Bottega Veneta presented ‘On The Rocks’ at the Palazzo San Fedele, a special location for the brand as it was the setting for creative director Matthieu Blazy’s first show and is its soon-to-be Head Quarters. Partnering with Cassina and Fondation Le Corbusier, the brand focuses on the iconic ‘LC14 Tabouret Cabanon’ stool described as a timeless icon of Le Corbusier that illustrates the excellence of the Cassina carpentry workshop. First conceived by the designer for his Côte d'Azur cabin, it was inspired by a washed-up whisky box he found on the shores beneath the residence, hence the title of the installation, which saw several reiterations piled high, one on top of the other, symbolising a rugged coastline.

Crafted from silk twill in a palette that echoes Ditre Italia’s latest armchair collection, the pillows are available in six different chromatic iterations inspired by desaturated colors at sunset. The pillows are meant to complement Ditre Itali’s Blazer armchair, designed by Daniele Lo Scalzo Moscheri and evoking a garment’s cuff. “A central illuminated island, like a magical garden of stone and glass, welcomes the items of the collection in the midst of special lighting effects,” teased Caliri about the installation conceived to present the Roda project. Upholstered in Missoni fabrics in five different patterns, the range will include the modular sofa Mamba; the theatrical daybed Arena; the lounge chair Laze, and a series of poufs, among others. DropCity is a new center for architecture and design that will be born inside Magazzini Raccordati, the old warehouses of the Central Station (M2 and M3 Centrale FS or M1 Pasteur). Still work in progress, in the next few years, it will present itself as a hub where production ateliers, exhibition spaces, carpentry workshops, robotics and advanced prototyping coexist.

Featuring Arflex furniture pieces designed by Cini Boeri imagined in exclusive Loro Piana fabrics, this showcase is a testament to Boeri's enduring appeal. The installation welcomed visitors to freely interact with the capsule furniture collection, to touch, sit and even lay down which injected the event with a joyous fervour in reflection of Boeri’s playful, enduring influence and visionary appeal. The centrepiece of Lasvit's exhibition, ‘Re/Creation’, situated at the beautiful Palazzo Isimbardi, was "Porta," a monumental installation by the brand's Art Director Maxim Velcovsky. DIMORECENTRALE – OCCUPAZIONE

The assembled group of listeners—which included Zawe Ashton, Poppy Delevingne, and Ella Richards, all decked out in head-to-toe Miu Miu—were captivated, and when it came time for the talk to end you could have heard a pin drop. (Until, that is, the room quickly erupted into applause.) Afterwards, guests chatted over canapés and spritzes in the charming book-lined lounge space, with many already beginning to thumb through their provided copies of Forbidden Notebook. It was a brilliantly executed new facet of Miu Miu’s tradition of championing women creatives—see their Women’s Tales film program as another example—and an unexpected highlight of Milan Design Week.

The outdoor installation hopes to put the themes of relation and contact forward, focusing on shapes, materials, hues and depth. For Milan Design Week 2024, Bottega Veneta honors Le Corbusier and his LC14 Tabouret Cabanon table design, originally conceived by the Swiss-French architect and designer for his personal cabin, or ‘cabanon,’ located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera. Matthieu Blazy and Bottega Veneta partnered with Cassina and Fondation Le Corbusier for the indoor installation, adding the architect and designer’s Cabanon stools, which dominate most of the exhibition space. Fashion brand Issey Miyake's Milan exhibition Fold and Crease will present a project that it worked on together with Dutch collective We Make Carpets. Together, they have created a series of installations designed to evoke the craftsmanship of Miyake's clothing. Càntir, the traditional Catalan clay pitcher, has been reimagined by sixteen designers and artists from Barcelona for the Terra Rossa exhibition, which was curated by Júlia Esqué and has a concept by Apartamento Studios.

In collaboration with Ginori 1735, Saint Laurent reintroduced twelve original plates from the Villa Planchart Segnaposto collection. Crafted using traditional techniques and enveloped with motifs nodding to the architectural design, the decorative porcelain plates were meticulously hand-painting at Ginori 1735’s Italian factory, preserving the essence of Ponti’s visionary design. Inside the Issey Miyake boutique, art collective We Make Carpets created a series of surface installations. Visitors were greeted to the boutique with over 50,000 colored skewers and pins stuck into the foam base, highlighting both brands’s focus on meticulous material research and techniques. ‘The whole project is based on fold and crease, designs that you can either squeeze, cramp, or bend.
